Happy Thanksgiving! As is my tradition here on the Deadpod, Thanksgiving is the time for Acoustic Dead. This year I've found two sets of fine acoustic Dead that I thought you would enjoy. The first is from July 30, 1970 at the Matrix in San Francisco and the second from earlier that year, on May 14th, in Kirkwood Missouri. There's only one repeat in the two sets - Candyman - but I didn't think you'd mind.. Grateful Dead The Matrix San Francisco, CA 7/30/1970 - Thursday Three - 25:26:00 To Lay Me Down [6:20][0:39] Dire Wolf [4:05][0:07] Candyman [6:37][0:09]%[1:05] % Rosalie McFall [3:35] % A Voice From On High [2:59]%[0:34 Intro] Swing Low Sweet Chariot [2:50] Grateful Dead Meramec Community College Kirkwood, MO 5/14/1970 - Thursday One - 28:21:00 Intro [1:51] Don't Ease Me In [2:54][1:35] Friend Of The Devil [3:27][0:42] Deep Elem Blues [6:07][0:13] Silver Threads And Golden Needle [3:36][1:55] Candyman [5:26] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod112725.mp3 I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who listen to the Deadpod and those of you who support the Deadpod for your kindness. I would not have the energy to do this all these years if it wasn't for your kind words and support. Thank you. I hope you and yours have a wonderful Thanksgiving and hope you enjoy this selection of acoustic Grateful Dead.

We head to Shakedown Street on this week's Deadpod with a fine version from Long Beach California on November 14, 1987. A great start to this short first set, followed, somewhat unfortunately in my opinion, by 'Little Red Rooster;, but the boys more than make up for it with the rest of set including a nice 'Althea' and 'When I Paint My Masterpiece' and my personal highlight - Brent giving us a spirited 'Hey Pocky Way' Jerry closes things with a smokin' hot 'Deal' We will save the second set for after our Thanksgiving special next week.. We continue with the second set from the Uptown Theatre in Chicago on November 18, 1978. This one starts with a fine Scarlet>Fire, perhaps a bit shorter than some, but with some nice Garcia intensity leading into Fire. Miracle follows leading into an excellent 'He's Gone' - there's an interesting jam here unlike most you'll hear in this song. The recording really brings this one home. Instead of going right into Drums, we get Bobby and Phil leading the band into a fine 'Other One'. Once they do go into Drums, they go into a unique Ollin Arageed space.. 'Wharf Rat' then 'Sugar Magnolia ' end the set, but surprise, they do a 'One More Saturday Night' encore... This week's Deadpod takes us to Chicago - to the Uptown Theater home of many fine Grateful Dead shows. This one is from Saturday, November 18, 1978. Our tape starts, unfortunately, with an abbreviated 'Jack Straw', but what we have shows us the energy the band came on stage with on this evening. A soulful 'Candyman' follows, then the 'Me & My Uncle>Big River' combo - marked by an exceptional Big River marked by some very nice solos by Garcia. He's just warming up however, as he follows with a great 'Sugaree' The rest of the set is equally well played, but I want to point out the beautiful 'From the Heart of Me' that Donna Jean Godchaux performs. She sings this one beautifully, and I wanted to bring us a reminder of just how great she was. I'm very saddened by her passing as I'm sure you are as well.. Grateful Dead Uptown Theatre Chicago, IL 11/18/1978 - Saturday One Jack Straw [5:37] Candyman [7:13] Me And My Uncle [2:58] > Big River [6:11] Sugaree [13:53] El Paso [4:10] Stagger Lee [6:05] It's All Over Now [6:44] From The Heart Of Me [3:29] The Music Never Stopped [7:37] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod110725.mp3 "When I awoke the stars were out And shining, shining for you and me All I ever want to be Safe and warm In your arms All I have from the heart of me"

Happy Halloween!! In honor of the fact that this week's Deadpod falls on Halloween, I decided to go back and find an appropriate show that the band played on this date... I think this one from 1969 is certainly worthy of a listen.. The show starts out with a truly nasty recording of Casey Jones - I left it in for the sake of completeness, but I hope you will stick with it as the recording greatly improves after that. There is a fair bit of hiss throughout but nevertheless this is a wonderful artifact of the young Grateful Dead.. The Cryptical>Drums>OtherOne>Cryptical has a wild drum segment that is great fun, and the China>Rider has a very nice transition jam between them. The second set highlights include a Pigpen taking over at the end here, with the last three songs showcasing his blues delivery. 'Easy Wind' was still relatively new - this is the 7th time played, and the tape ends with a massive 30+minute Lovelight ;) Grateful Dead 10/31/69 San Jose State University San Jose, CA One: Casey Jones Yellow Dog Story Dire Wolf It Hurts Me Too Cryptical Envelopment> Drums> The Other One> Cryptical Envelopment> 2 China Cat Sunflower> Jam> I Know You Rider Two: High Time Sittin' On Top Of The World Next Time You See Me> Easy Wind Turn On Your Lovelight COMMENTS Casey Jones cuts in just after the first notes of the tune. Lovelight cuts off during the final flourishes. DeadBase IX lists a Mama Tried after I Know You Rider. We continue with the second set from the Grateful Dead's performance at the Moody Coliseum in Dallas Texas back on Saturday, October 15, 1977. The 'Samson and Delilah' opener is a great start to a fine set.. Donna follows with a nice version of 'Sunrise'. The 'Terrapin Station' that follows is not as monumental in its buildup as some but is a fine delivery by Garcia. The meat of this set comes with a very nice 'Saint Stephen' into 'Not Fade Away' into a sweet 'Stella Blue'.. the band then rolls into a rockin' 'Sugar Magnolia' to close the second set. They return for a double encore, with 'Truckin' leading into the obligatory, but rockin' 'One More Saturday Night'.. Grateful Dead Moody Coliseum - Southern Methodist University Dallas, TX 10/15/1977 - Saturday Two Samson And Delilah [7:02] ; Sunrise [3:41] ; Terrapin Station [11:03] > Saint Stephen [8:19] > Not Fade Away [10:42] > Stella Blue [9:17] > Sugar Magnolia [11:07] Encore Truckin' [8:09] > One More Saturday Night [4:53] You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102425.mp3 Thanks so much for your kind support!

This week we join the Dead as they play the last show of a 3 show run in Texas during October 1977. This one takes place on the campus of SMU in Dallas Texas on October 15. The first set opens with a spirited 'Bertha' into 'Good Lovin'. They move into a more laid back mood with 'They Love Each Other' then the 'Mama Tried' into 'Big River' ramps things bck up. A nice 'Ramble on Rose' is marred here with a nasty cut..sorry about that. The 'Peggy O' that follows 'Looks Like Rain' has some very nice vocals, and the set-closing 'Let It Grow' has some nice jamming to close the set. Grateful Dead Moody Coliseum - Southern Methodist University Dallas, TX 10/15/1977 - Saturday One Bertha--> (7:19) Good Lovin' (7:55) They Love Each Other (8:32) Mama Tried--> (2:34) Big River (6:05) Ramble On Rose// (6:00) Looks Like Rain (9:17) Peggy-O (7:36) Let It Grow (11:27) You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod101725.mp3 I hope you enjoy the show.. btw - if you are on facebook you can join our discussion there at: the Deadpod group. http://deadshow.blogspot.com This week here on the Deadpod is a fine second set from the band's show over in London England on October 4, 1981. I'm sure you'll agree that this is a fine performance by the boys.. Some of the highlights are a smokin' Samson and Delilah, the jam between Scarlet and Fire, and an interesting 'Lost Sailor'. Drums is notable for the 'Spanish Jam' leading into a fine 'Other One'. All this is captured in a fine recording.. This week the Deadpod travels to London England, to the Rainbow Theater, where the band played eight wonderful shows during 1981. This was the next to last performance at the Rainbow, on October 4, 1981. This recording really highlights Brent and Garcia.. its a bright and open recording I think you'll enjoy. Some of the highlights are the Jack-A-Roe, Beat It On Down the Line, and Brown Eyed Women that come in the middle of the set, but there are really no clunkers here in my opinion. The set closing Deal is a smoker as always... Here's some old-fashioned, good ol' Grateful Dead for you.. This week from September 18, 1970 at the Fillmore East in New York City.. we have a partial soundboard tape that has somehow survived these years to bring us back to what it was like to hear the boys in that magical space. The first two songs, Truckin' and Black Peter, are from the acoustic set - with Pigpen on piano on Truckin' and David Nelson mandolin on Black Peter... The end of the electric set which we have here is blessed with a rare 'Operator' and two really well jammed out numbers - Dancin' in the Streets and Good Lovin'. This is a beautiful recording .. soak it up. Grateful Dead Fillmore East New York, NY 1970-09-18 - Friday Acoustic Set 01. Truckin' 02. Black Peter End of Electric Set 03. Me & My Uncle 04. We celebrate the 82nd birthday of Mickey Hart this week with a great show that took place back on his 38th birthday at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California. The recording starts with Joan Baez regaling Mickey with a 'Happy Birthday' chorus.. once we put that behind us we are led into a hot 'Minglewood' and then a quite nice 'They Love Each Other'. They amp it up a bit with a 'Mama Tried>Mexicali' then Jerry brings out 'Candyman', which leads into a 'Little Red Rooster'. A rocking 'Cumberland Blues' leads into a 'Beat It on Down the Line' and the audience tape lets us hear the crowd loving it.. 'Althea' that follows may be the highlight of the set, but the boys are not done here, with a 'Sailor>Saint' and 'Deal' to close out the first set.... This week on the Deadpod we have the second set from the band's performance at the beautiful Greek Theater in Berkeley California on August 18, 1989. This is pretty classic Dead for this high water period of the band, with a groovin' 'Iko Iko' to open things up, followed by the mellow 'Looks Like Rain'. Jerry brings out a classic 'Terrapin Station' leading into a fine Drums and Space. I love the 'Crazy Fingers' out of space, and the 'Stella Blue' in the ballad slot hits just right. Following the rockin' 'Lovelight' we are treated to a double encore - with 'And We Bid You Goodnight' following a nice 'Black Muddy River'. Happy Labor Day Weekend! I hope that this first set from the 2nd night of a 3 night Rex Benefit run at the Greek Theater is a great start to your holiday! This is a fine recording of the band during one of their more interesting periods. 'Cold Rain and Snow' is always a great opener and I loved the 'Row Jimmy';. I even found the Minglewood to be quite good... and the first set Victim is unusual and goes into a very nice 'Bird Song'. The second set which we'll hear next week is more improvisational, but I hope you enjoy this fine first set.. We continue this week with the second set from August 5, 1979 at Oakland California. This set starts with a fine 'Scarlet>Fire' - a warning there is a cut in the Scarlet (sadly there are several on this tape but I feel that the show still deserves your attention). The transition to 'Fire' is wonderful, as is Garcia's solo there. 'Estimated' and 'Eyes of the World' follow, then we are treated with Hamza el-Din in Drums, and a nice transition into 'Not Fade Away'. The notable 3 encores really stand out, sadly there is another cut at the end of 'Johnny B Goode' .. I hope you enjoy it ! The dog days of August are upon us.. but hopefully this week's Deadpod can see us through.. this is a good one from August 5, 1979 in Oakland. The first set certainly starts out rather laid back and so is perhaps fitting for the time... check out the transition from 'Franklin's' into 'Me & My Uncle'.. The set is well played in my opinion and the recording is good - I will tell you there is a brutal cut at the end of the 'Althea' .. ouch .. the transition from 'Lost Sailor' into 'Althea' is sweet however.. Hey Now! Wasn't sure I could get this one out, but here goes :) This is the second set from the band's performance on August 12, 1972 at Sacramento California. I think you'll enjoy this set, there is some fine jamming here.. the opening GSET, does have the first frew notes cut.. Ramble on Rose, follows and Beat It Down the Line.. including some chatter :) The heart of the set comes as the following He's Gone goes into Drums and then into a roaring 'Other One'.. this is a beautiful set culminating in a 'Black Peter' (the only time Black Peter appeared seg'd into an Other One). The 'Truckin' that follows is a highlight as well. Here we are - Jerry's Birthday and the start of the Days Between - as well as the day of the first of the GD 60 concerts out in San Francisco! I do envy all those able to attend! In the meantime we have a fine show from August of 1972 to start the celebrations on this week's Deadpod. This comes from Sacramento California on August 12, 1972. We will listen to the long first set this week - then the second set when I return in two weeks. I have to be gone next week and due to the constraints of posting on my podcast host I will be unable to have another Deadpod ready for next Friday. You will find lots to enjoy here - Keith and Donna are still settling in as the band adjusts to no Pigpen, but there is plenty of great music here. I will simply call your attention to the fine jazzy 'Bird Song' and of course the 'Playin' In the Band'. There is a rare 1st set 'Stella Blue' and plenty of rocking here as well. The band is also quite chatty which is always fun to hear.
