The Keep Slack Album Club // 14 Nov 2025
11/13/2025
This month on The Keep Slack Album Club, I'm joined by Slack City presenter (Japan Blues) and record industry veteran Howard Williams to talk about the beautiful album 'Rock Bottom' by Robert Wyatt. Howard is my kind of guest. He’s charming, knowledgeable and the owner of a record collection we’d all secrectly love. Over the course of the show, we talk about how he got in to Japanese music (personally and professionally), his early visits, Café Oto and the seeing Alternative TV at what might be their last ever gig. What are you waiting for press play now...

Japan Blues // 13 Nov 2025
11/11/2025
Japan Blues presents A Golden Hour Of EM Records. Major British record label EMI, the venerable British record monolith, ended thirteen years ago in a death by a thousand cuts, the charitable work of hedge funds, equity traders or whatever corporate cannibals like to call themselves. EM Records, from Japan however, over 25 years of age, forges on in rude health. Fiercely independent, forever artistically on the move, with the occasional hint of mischief. Having created a huge catalogue covering most genres imaginable, from Carnatic flute to musical saw, Joe Meek to steel pan dub disco, Czech jazz vocal to bicycle wheel gamelan - someone mention bagpipes? We could go on, and EM Records certainly will. Among a hall full of trophies, EM unearthed two lesser-known British classics, namely Steel An’ Skin and Brenda Ray - now both essentials in any human’s collection. What we at Japan Blues are here for today are naturally EM’s Japanese releases. Also a broad sweep: un-homogenised minyou (Japanese traditional folk), eccentric dub of various stripes, poetry and electronics, Japanese takes on blue grass, contemporary R’n’B, 80s DIY, jungle - best stop us, before we overheat the server. Listen with all three ears. You can’t beat EM, join EM.

Graham Duff's Mixtape // 12 Oct 2025
11/11/2025
Fresh underground music extracted from multiple genres. Featuring the lyrical art-rock of ChopChop, spectral dub from The Bug, electro pop courtesy of Boy Jr., the ambient soul of Monesty, streetwise raps with Lady Leshurr, a super fine collaboration between Charles Hayward and DÄLEK, plus plenty more besides. From out of the vaults come the glossy pop of Graham Lewis’s He Said, vibrant acid house from Charles B & Adonis, and The Beatles at their heaviest. Meanwhile, this week’s soundtrack music selections come from two of the 20th century’s greatest film composers. Namely, Henry Mancini with his score for the 1970 romantic drama ‘The Sunflower’ and Elmer Bernstein’s music for the 1974 Roger Moore thriller ‘Gold’. Dig in!
