Brian Turner Overdrive // 22 Oct 2025 - PROLAPSE Special
10/21/2025
This week: Formed in Leicester, UK in 1992, Prolapse were the perhaps the antidote to the flag-waving, nostalgic Britpop infusion to that decade; a chaotic, repetitive, sometimes dream-pop-leaning unit fronted by the duo of Linda Steelyard and Mick Derrick, whose presence and sometimes opposing chemistry heightened the clamor and contrasts going on in the music. After some amazing records, they called it a day in 2000, sporadically regrouping for gigs in 2015 and 2022 before full-on reuniting last year to produce their excellent new LP I Wonder When They’re Going To Destroy Your Face, out right now. With members’ interests immersed in the DNA of such musical bastions as Can, The Fall, Wire, Branca and even Throbbing Gristle and Faust, Prolapse’s full-on rock trajectory live and on record has been nothing short of powerful, and their return to UK stages in October is met with high anticipation from still-dedicated fans. Tune in Wednesday, October 15th 4-6pm ET as EVR’s Brian Turner traces the lineage with Linda and Mick and catches up on lost decades and a new era for the band.

Graham Duff's Mixtape // 22 Oct 2025
10/21/2025
The best new music taken from a range of genres. Including the Americana of Racing Mount Pleasant, insistent electronic rhythms from Death in Vegas, contemporary lover’s rock with King Hopeton, the indie rock of The Outcome, synth pop courtesy of Ayria, full tilt drum and bass from Mad Squabbles, and plenty more besides. From out of the vaults come the dance floor magic of La Funk Mob remixed by Nightmares on Wax, and the pop-prog of The Strawbs, whilst Mr. Taylor presents an improbably pleasing mash-up of Stevie Wonder and Oasis. Not forgetting this week’s soundtrack music selections, namely Stanley Myers music for Nicolas Roeg’s haunting 1983 movie ‘Eureka’, and Lalo Schifrin’s score for the 1971 dystopian sci-fi classic ‘THX 1138’. Dig in!

Japan Blues // 16 Oct 2025
10/15/2025
How significant is a music genre? In the early to mid 1990s, a peculiar and vaguely described strand was believed to be forming in the central Tokyo district of Shibuya. Known mostly for its huge geometric pedestrian crossing, the station it adjoins had long been a meeting place for youth, often by Hachiko, the famous dog statue. Then possibly to rummage round the myriad record shops, eateries, or Mandarake for comics and toys. Possibly the town’s name being used for this micro trend was to label it as a hipster movement. Outside of Japan, it certainly vibrated with a new cool mystique, eventually attracting record labels from the UK and Europe. Using the latest sampler technology, combining a gamut of previously known styles, many tracks were assembled almost to see how many breaks could be crammed in. Jazz flavours went into the pot, 60s grooves, French styling, Brazilian rhythms or meat and potatoes breaks - maybe a smattering of B-boy flavouring. An early taste of this style was cooked up by Towa Tei, as a member of Deee-Lite, way back in 1990 with the “sampladelic” meisterwerk 'Groove Is In The Heart'. Ploughing a furrow apart from the blander downbeat or frenetic house of the west, somehow a peculiar Japanese aesthetic thrived in this brief moment. A loose canon, the leading lights may not have comfortably accepted their role, but from the underground up, Nobukazu Takemura, Tosh & Kudo, Hiroshi Fujiwara, and United Future Organisation were names that crept into foreigners’ wants lists and boxes.
