I'm In Love With That Song Podcast: The Art of Mixing

4/28/2026
We talk a lot about Mixing on this podcast, but we've never explained what that actually means-- until now. Join me and my guest, recording engineer & producer Drew Townson, as we look at the differences between "recording", "mixing" and "mastering". Get a behind-the-scenes look at the decisions made in the studio, the challenges faced, and why you can't really "fix it in the mix". Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

History in Five Songs Episode 354: ZZ Top and Billy Idol as Doppelgangers

4/28/2026
In Episode 354 of History in Five Songs with Martin Popoff, Martin compares and contrasts ZZ Top and Billy Idol as unlikely “doppelgangers,” tracing how both evolved from distinct early roots into MTV-era, dance-infused rock superstars before eventually sliding into formula and diminishing returns. Only Three Lads: The Kingbees' Jamie James - Top 5 Road Trip Albums

4/28/2026
Get your motor runnin', head out on the highway. Yup, this week we're looking for adventure...and whatever comes our way...because it's an O3L Road Trip! Everyone's piling in the van and bringing five albums with them. Our Third Lad this week has not only spent countless hours on the road, but has made some great road trip albums himself! Jamie James is best known as the singer/songwriter/guitarist of the new wave/roots rock band The Kingbees. The Kingbees recorded two albums for RSO Records (Robert Stigwood's classic label that was also home to Bee Gees and Eric Clapton) - the first of which included the Billboard Top 100-charting single "My Mistake" in 1980. Jamie has also played with a late-70s touring version of Steppenwolf, and spent decades playing with musically inclined actors (or is it dramatically inclined musicians?) Harry Dean Stanton and Dennis Quaid. Better yet, Jamie has a new album out on Oglio Records called Straight Up. It channels a lifetime of grit, heartbreak, and swagger into a punchy collection of blues and rock n' roll tunes. You'll hear some amazing tales of rock n' roll - including crashing Apple Records headquarters, getting bottled off the stage while opening for AC/DC and ZZ Top, and getting a pistol pulled on him by Phil Spector while trying to escape listening to a Celine Dion demo! Your only mistake would be NOT listening! Dang it! This van only has an 8-track player?!?! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ugly American Werewolf in London: Jeff Beck - Wired

4/25/2026
We reviewed Blow By Blow by Jeff Beck last year and thought it was great (Ep 222) so we figured we'd also review Wired as it turns 50. And while Jeff did bring back producer George Martine (uh, The Beatles) he did choose to bring in some new blood. Most notably, he retained Jan Hammer - famous to the boys for creating the Miami Vice theme - and a jazz/new age legend in his own right. Wilbur Bascomb provides the bass (he's a real allstar on this record though Hammer does fill in on a couple of songs), Narada Michael Walden writes some songs and lays down the beat with Max Middleton returning on the keys to provide the foundation for Jeff and Jan to do their thing. Hearing these two playing off of each other can be intense and I wouldn't call this a rock record but more of a jazz fusion experiment. Led Boots is a heavy starter and while Jeff is happy to let others shine, he standouts extraordinarily on Charles Mingus' Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. Jan Hammer write Blue Wind starts the second side with some funk (provided mostly by Hammer on various machines) and the bluesy, jazzy jams make this record a showcase for getting talent in a room and letting them do their thing. There are no vocals on this album which makes it so surprising that it went platinum in the US. Jeff Beck never chased big fame or success, he chased tone and talent to play alongside. He willingly shares the spotlight and adds his flourishes when asked to but despite the name on the cover, it's very much a jazzy collaboration between some real pros. And he didn't think he could top it - he didn't make another studio album until 1980. Shout It Out Loudcast: Album Review Crew "5150"

4/21/2026
On the 75th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom & Zeus welcome back special guest, Podcaster, Comic, Musician and Shout It Out Loudcast Hall Of Famer, Izzy Presley to review the 1986 hard rock landscape changing album "5150" from Van Halen. Van Halen was coming off their diamond selling album, 1984, when the band and legendary frontman David Lee Roth split. Van Halen was known of course for their Guitar God founder Eddie Van Halen. His brother, drummer Alex Van Halen and his legendary snare was still there as was underrated bassist Michael Anthony and his incredible backing vocals. So the band recruited the Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar to replace Diamond Dave. Sammy was already a well established rock star who can sing, write songs and even play guitar. 5150 was Van Halen's seventh album and made it to #1 on Billboard album charts and eventually went 6X platinum. This was Van Halen's first number one album. This album was different than the previous DLR albums with a more polished and pop oriented sound that translated into more accessible music. This is the beginning of the so-called Van Hagar era. This was the Patreon pick and as usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. So tune in to find out if "Do you like Van Halen?" Ah, 1990...the year of acid washed jeans, Beverly Hills 90210, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Oh, and lots of Bea Arthur. Of course, none of which we really talk about on this episode. Instead, we're focusing on the best (mostly) alternative albums to come out of that fantastic year. Returning to Third Lad-dom is power pop great Jim Basnight, a fixture on the scene since the late '70s. What has Jim been up to in the past two and a half years since his last appearance? Well, good thing you asked, because the answer is "plenty." For starters, his bands The Meice and The Moberlys were honored with tracks on the definitive Cherry Red box sets Looking For The Magic: American Power Pop in the Seventies and I Wanna Be a Teen Again: North American Power Pop of the '80s. He also released a steady stream of singles throughout 2025 that culminated in the full length album release of Under The Rock in December. As a blues devotee and expert, he's finished writing an exhaustive history of Sonny Boy Williamson, which will hopefully see a silver screen adaptation one day. All that, and he's still found the time to partake in his favorite pasttime - hanging out with O3L. Relive the fun, memories and music of this pivotal year. Plus, play along with the brand new O3L game "Ninety...or Nonsense?!?" It's the most fun you can have without telling someone to "eat my shorts, man!" Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- I Wanna Rock! Twisted Sister

4/19/2026
Twisted Sister started as a hard-working bar band in the New York/New Jersey club scene. These guys played thousands of shows—eight thousand performances—grinding it out night after night in dive bars long before anyone knew their names. They perfected their wild theatrical metal sound the old-fashioned way: pure sweat and persistence. Then came 1984. Stay Hungry exploded, and MTV turned 'We're Not Gonna Take It' and 'I Wanna Rock' into anthems. Those over-the-top videos launched the band from club stages straight to multi-platinum stardom. One minute they're playing for drunks; the next, they're rock stars riding the video revolution. But success has its battles. In 1985, Dee Snider stood before a Senate committee during the PMRC hearings. While others stayed quiet, Dee looked Congress in the eye, defended artistic freedom, and made the whole room look like out-of-touch fools. It was one of the most badass moments in rock history. Years later, the band was gearing up for their 50th anniversary shows. But Dee made the tough call: he couldn't deliver the high-energy, kick-ass performance he demanded of himself anymore—thanks to arthritis and the wear of decades on the road. Rather than give fans anything less, he stepped down with class and integrity. Now, he's handed the reins to Sebastian Bach, who has Dee's full blessing to front Twisted Sister for these special 2026 dates. The spirit lives on: loud, defiant, and still not gonna take it. From the bars to MTV glory, from humiliating Congress to passing the torch—that's the Twisted Sister story Get In Touch Check us out online, on Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube. or drops us an email at show@prisonersofrockandroll.com.
