The eye test said the Lakers did a lot of things better in Game 2 than in Game 1 (beyond just winning the game). The difference in physicality was particularly visible on the defensive side, where LA was, for the most part, pretty suffocating all night. But it also showed up on offense, even though the Lakers only scored on more point on Tuesday compared to Saturday. They ran more action, set considerably better (and more frequent) screens. And it bears out in passing data, too. The Lakers passed more frequently, particularly the big three, all of whom threw more of them in Game 2 than in Game 1. And all of this stuff is related. More urgency getting into the offense gives more time to throw more passes. More, better run actions create more opportunities to make good passes. Better spacing. Harder cuts. And so on. It's an energy the Lakers will need to sustain heading into Friday's Game 3 in Minnesota. One more thing that might help? Paying less attention to Rudy Gobert. It wasn't easy, it wasn't pretty, but it was enough to get the job done. With their backs against the wall, the Lakers needed a victory, in whatever form they could manage. To get it, they'd need to turn up the physicality, turn up the energy and bring some force to the series. And they did. LA's activity, especially in the first half, was outstanding. They built a big lead in the first quarter, and spent the rest of the game defending it, and while there were some nervous moments, the Lakers were never really threatened. Final score, 94-85. Series tied 1-1, going back to Minnesota for Friday's Game 3. The Lakers defense was spectacular all game long, and on the other end, Luka Dončić was outstanding, finishing with 31/12/9. LeBron James and Austin Reaves both managed to get downhill to the bucket (compensating for very poor outside shooting). At some point, the Lakers are going to have to find more efficient way to get points on the board. Averaging 94.5, as they've done through two games, is not going to win the series. Luka Dončić had 31 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists while LeBron James added 21 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists as the Los Angeles Lakers evened their series against the Wolves, beating Minnesota 94-85. Monday in El Segundo, the Lakers were undo no illusion about the stakes in tonight's Game 2 against Minnesota at the Crypt. To a man, it was called a must win. Because while the series isn't over with a loss, winning three of four—with three of the remaining games in Minnesota—would be a very, very tall order. So it's go hard or go home, so to speak, with a big emphasis on go hard. Because that was a big problem in Saturday's loss. The Lakers simply didn't match the physicality and intensity brought by the Wolves, and that, JJ Redick believes, was the biggest contributing factor in the Game 1 loss. So that's the first "adjustment," if you want to call it that. Play harder, with more intention, more purpose, more organization. That will allow the game plan, including whatever tweaks Redick and staff have cooked up over the last couple of days, to have a chance of working. It'll help, too, for individuals to perform better, starting with Austin Reaves, who described his play as "s***y Monday afternoon. Or Dorian Finney-Smith, who admitted the stagnation offensively from the Lakers, which limited everyone's touches, brought down his energy. There was a lot that didn't work for the Lakers in Saturday's Game 1 against Minnesota. For starters, the Lakers simply lacked the needed physicality and intensity required to compete with a team like the Wolves in a playoff setting. Why? It's hard to know. But it needs to change on Tuesday, and it's hard to believe the Lakers—hyper aware of their failures in that regard—won't bring it at a higher level. From there, it starts to get to execution and performance. And regarding the latter, it starts with Austin Reaves and LeBron James. Reaves was particularly ineffective, starting slow and (save a couple of minutes in the third quarter) never really getting untracked. He needs to raise his level, and the Lakers need to do a better job of putting him in positions offensively to succeed. James wasn't great either... but he's LeBron, and has a very long track record of Game 1 losses that turn into series wins. But the Lakers need to find him ways to not have to try and generate so much offense in isolation. And as a group, that physicality that was lacking extends to the offense as well. Harder, more purposeful (and plentiful) cutting and screening. More intentional off-ball movement. And then on the other end, the Lakers have to pick a direction against Anthony Edwards, who was far too effective as a distributor on Saturday, in part because the Lakers made things too comfortable for him, collapsing the defense too late in possessions, and making it too hard to recover on shooters after Edwards dished. After the first quarter, it was all downhill for the Lakers. Minnesota controlled the offensive glass, getting too many second chance points. They hit too many triples, too many of which were wide open. They pressured the Lakers into bad offense. The result, a 117-95 win for Minnesota in Game 1 Saturday night at the Crypt. Luka Dončić put up 37 for the Lakers, but overall the team's offense was a disaster, with very little ball and player movement. Minnesota successfully turned the offense into a series of 1-on-1 possessions, and aside from Luka nobody was able to take much advantage. Meanwhile, bad shot selection put the Lakers on their heels. Things looked good for a quarter... and then the roof caved in. Saturday's 117-95 loss in Game 1 was a full menu of everything that felt concerning for the Lakers heading into the series. Controlling the defensive glass? Yeah, that was an issue. Defending the 3? Oh yeah, that was a problem. Avoiding transition opportunities? Not good! Too much frustration looking for foul calls? Too much of that! After that strong start, Minnesota basically out-everythinged the Lakers. Their defensive pressure took LA out of its offense, which made it very difficult to get the right structure defensively with any level of consistency. It's never a good idea to make definitive declarations after Game 1 of a series, but it's pretty obvious the Lakers have a lot of work to do before Tuesday's Game 2. At practice Thursday in El Segundo, Dorian Finney-Smith made it very clear that the Lakers as a team are looking forward to opening the playoffs on their home floor, and absorbing the energy the crowd can bring. Because make no mistake, Lakers fans are hyped for this, and the Lakers as a team worked very, very hard to earn home court advantage. Hopefully the Lakers won't need it, but it's great to know the boost provided by a home crowd in the postseason is in their back pocket for four games. Meanwhile, one of the most intriguing storylines of the series deals with Rudy Gobert. Thursday in El Segundo, Jaxson Hayes noted that while Gobert is his matchup, the Stifle Tower is not necessarily his focus. One big reason? Because the Wolves don't operate their offense with Gobert in a featured role. (Though if they'd like to try, I'm sure the Lakers would be ok with it.) That said, Gobert can still be incredibly disruptive, especially as a defender and a rebounder. Minnesota is expected to make a hard push on the offensive glass. So can the Lakers control his impact, and even force the Wolves into some tough decisions? The Lakers might prefer to play Hayes less and force the Wolves to match up with their small(ish) lineups. The Lakers open up what will surely be a challenging first round series against Minnesota on Saturday evening at the Crypt. Mission accomplished. The Lakers still don't know what team they're going to play in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, but they do know it'll be whatever team finishes sixth, following LA's 140-109 win over a (largely) resting Houston Rockets squad Friday night at the Crypt. After a slow start, the Lakers took control of the game and never let it go, comfortable knowing they could win pretty easily as long as they put in a reasonable level of focus. Luka Dončić led the way with 39 points, along with eight rebounds and seven assists. Austin Reaves finished with 23/7/6. About the only bad thing that happened was an injury scare with LeBron James in the second half, but based on LeBron's movement and attitude on the sidelines, the Lakers seemed to have dodged a bullet. And even if he's sore, with the win the Lakers can sit all their regulars on Sunday in Portland, and then rest up while the rest of the West does the whole play-in thing. Wednesday's game in Dallas was fascinating in part because it provided the first opportunity to see Luka Dončić playing for the Lakers against a team led by Anthony Davis, and the contrast between the two. Not that this is a shock, but the side-by-side reinforced all the reasons this trade was a generational opportunity for the Lakers. (And, to say the least, a controversial choice for Dallas.) While he didn't have his best game, Davis is unquestionably an elite talent, and one of the 10-15 best players in the NBA (with stretches where he's more like a top 10 guy). But Doncic is in the top 5. If you're someone who judges players on tiers—a smart way to do it—Luka is definitely a level above A.D.. That makes a huge impact. Then you add in the fact that Donćić, by virtue of his position, has an easier time controlling games. He's significantly younger. He's easier to build around. In the end, he gives the Lakers confidence on the floor and clarity off of it they simply couldn't have with Davis as a current and future centerpiece. None of this is a knock on Davis. It's a testament to Luka's dominance. But it's a big reason the Lakers have a far better shot of going deep in the postseason now than they did before the deal. That was impressive. In a highly emotional return to Dallas on Wednesday, Luka Dončić came out hot, scoring 14 first quarter points, 31 by halftime and finishing with 45, to go along with eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. Particularly impressive (especially to his teammates and coach) was how Luka was able to put on that type of performance after absorbing huge ovation from the crowd and an incredibly well done tribute video during pregame introductions. For the Lakers, 112-97 win, which featured a great fourth quarter push to regain control of the game and put it out of reach, has huge implications. They're now one win away from clinching the 3rd seed in the West, guaranteeing they'll host at least one playoff round, and at the least, they will finish in the top 6, meaning while teams are competing in the Play-In tournament, the Lakers will be resting. Just a remarkable night for the Luka, for the Lakers and their potential for a deep playoff run.
