In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham, Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") and intern India Otto are back to discuss what they saw from USC in the 34-32 loss at Illinois. It was a disappointing effort from the Men of Troy and they will need to use this bye week to figure out what went wrong and how they can fix it heading into an extremely important home game against Michigan. After rewatching the game, the crew talks about some of the highs that stood out, including incredible performances by Jayden Maiava, Makai Lemon and the tight ends, and the most concerning lows that included poor linebacker play, a lack of pressure from defensive line and poor coverage skills in the secondary. They also give an update from Tuesday's practice, where head coach Lincoln Riley put any rumors of rampant food poisoning that had a major impact on the players to bed, saying that a few guys were affected but it wasn't widespread and it wasn't an excuse for why they played so poorly. On this episode of the Peristyle Podcasts hosts Ryan Abraham and Coach Harvey Hyde are back together talking about the latest poor performance for the Trojans on the road, falling to the Fighting Illini 34-32 Saturday morning in Champaign. USC didn't look like it handled the multiple time zone travel and early kickoff very well, despite the team heading out to the Midwest a day early. Coach Hyde gives his thoughts on what went wrong for the Trojans on this Big Ten road trip, with an offense that looked like it could do almost anything it wanted and a defense that looked confused and failed to pick up stops time and time again. USC had no business being in the game but somehow mounted a crazy 14-point comeback late, taking a 32-31 lead with under two minutes left in the game. Unfortunately the defense wasn't able to step up and the Trojans lead was short lived with Illinois kicking the game winning field goal as time expired. On the offensive side, Coach Hyde talks about how there shouldn't be any excuses for injuries, football is a physical game and guys get hurt. He wants to see a better rhythm with the offense and let quarterback Jayden Maiava run the football more. On the defensive side Coach Hyde thinks Lincoln Riley was critical of the defense for the first time. A couple of years ago Riley said he would be move involved with the defense but from what we can see, he hasn't been. He is also seeing a lot of confusion when the ball is snapped and guys don't look like they know what they should be doing. It doesn't appear that this group is playing as a cohesive unit and it's hard to win football games without a good defense. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple-Double") and intern Riley Sager are back in studio breaking down another disappointing road performance by this USC football team, falling to Illinois 34-32 in Champaign. The offense turned it over twice, the defense couldn't get a stop and untimely penalties, including one that wiped out a 75-yard touchdown, continue to plague the Trojans who fall to 4-1 on the season, 1-1 in the Big Ten, and out of the AP top-25. Despite all of the sloppy play and miscues, USC miraculously took a 32-31 lead with 1:55 left in the game, the first and only lead for the guys in Cardinal and Gold. Then the Fighting Illini did what they had done all game, moved the ball with ease against the Trojan defense, setting up the game winning 41-yard field goal as time expired. Both Ryan and Connor were in Illinois to witness this debacle and give their thoughts on what went wrong, from Kamari Ramsey getting food poisoning, to center Kilian O'Connor going down with an injury, the defense giving up 503 yards and over 12 yards per pass attempt and everything in between. In this special edition of Tunnel Vision hosts Ryan Abraham and Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple Double") and intern India Otto are back in studio taking a detailed look at USC's next opponent, the Illinois Fighting Illini. The Trojans have started out 2-0 in Big Ten play, with a road win against Purdue and a home victory against Michigan State. Now the task at hand becomes more difficult, playing an ranked Illinois squad that was just humiliated on the road by Indiana. The Illini will do everything it their power to bounce back and use the game against the Trojans as their "get right" game, but will Jayden Maiava and company simply be too much for the Illini? USC's offense has been clicking with an explosive passing attack and relentless ground game and it will try and exploit an Illinois defense that has been decimated by injuries in the secondary. The Trojans have only punted four times all season and with Maiava taking care of the football, the points have been coming fast and furious. Defensively no program has sacked the quarterback more than the Trojans and no Power Four school has given up as many sacks as the Illini. With the 8 p.m. local kickoff the game didn't get over until close to midnight and while it wasn't the cleanest performance, USC is now 4-0 and 2-0 in conference play. Coach Hyde starts the show talking about how improved this USC offense is and how he liked the game plan against Michigan State, utilizing two back sets, play action passes and quarterback runs. With one of the top receivers out and losing a top offensive lineman didn't derail this offense that is playing at an elite level right now. On the defensive side Coach Hyde talks about the much improved play of the defensive line, some shortcomings from the linebackers and how he feels the secondary is playing confused and it is hurting their ability to play at a higher level. Coach loves freshman Jahkeem Stewart and feels he has the potential to be a great player for the Trojans. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple-Double") and intern Riley Sager are back in studio breaking down the Trojans 45-31 victory over Michigan State late Saturday night in the Coliseum. It looked like USC had put the game away but the Spartans, in large part to a series of SC mistakes, clawed their way back in the third quarter cutting the lead to just 7 points. At that point quarterback Jayden Maiava and the rest of the offense took over and created some much needed separation, thwarting any potential MSU miracle comeback. Through four games the offense has been elite with no turnovers for Maiava and only four punts on the season, one of which was garbage time in the final seconds of the Michigan State victory. USC is first in total offense at 584 yards per game, first in points per game at 52.5, 1st in points per play, 1st in yards per play at 9.1, 4th in nation with 7.1 yards per rush and 4th with 11.9 yards per pass attempt. It has been a different story on the defensive side of the ball, with some marked improvements over last season but also some major concerns. The front seven is getting after it, forcing a lot of negative plays and pressure on the opposing quarterbacks. However, the secondary is struggling with multiple busted coverages each game including two that turned into Spartan touchdowns on Saturday. The penalties have also derailed some of the better defensive efforts, including four flags on one MSU drive that turned a punt where USC got the ball back into a Michigan State touchdown. The crew talks about all of that and everything else they saw in the Coliseum and what their initial thoughts are heading into a tough road test against No. 23 Illinois. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple-Double") and intern India Otto are back in studio previewing the Trojans late night showdown against Michigan State. The Spartans come into the Coliseum boasting a 3-0 record with quarterback Aidan Chiles playing at a high level and more importantly, not turning the ball over. USC is coming off its first real Big Ten road win at Purdue and will try to secure another conference win before the huge road showdown with No. 9 Illinois. The crew talks about the state of this USC football program heading into the game with an offense that has generated more yards per game than any other program, the most sacks in the country and some concerns in a secondary that has struggled at times and is dealing with multiple injuries. Looking at the Spartans, there are certainly some concerns despite the undefeated record. The defense has been leaking, giving up points to FCS Youngstown State last weekend, and there are multiple major injuries that head coach Jonathan Smith is dealing with. Lincoln Riley faced off with Smith back in 2022 when the Trojans survived an upset bid from Oregon State. Eventual Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams struggled until late, finally putting together a touchdown drive to give USC a 17-14 victory in Corvallis. Smith will try to recreate some of that magic to give the Spartans a shot Saturday night, coming in as a 17.5 point underdog to SC. The Helium Boys are back from the road! Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return to the remote studio to break down USC finally winning a Big Ten road game outside Los Angeles with Saturday's 33-17 victory over Purdue. It marked USC's first win in the Eastern Time Zone since 2012. Shotgun spends his 'Two-Minute Drill' discussing the unique rain delay that caused this game to be delayed more than three hours and the vintage drainage system at Ross-Ade Stadium that led to a dry field. Chris uses his time to praise the USC fans that made the trek to West Lafayette and finally got to see a Trojan win on the road after struggles last year. The game wasn't as clean as the first two in the Coliseum, but to be able to get a victory on the road against an improved team under bizarre circumstances with the over three hour lightning delay shows this team has some resilience and is capable of battling through adversity. The guys talk about some of the huge plays in this game, including the 360-pound defensive lineman Jamaal Jarrett plucking a tipped pass out of the air and returning it 70-yards for the touchdown. The Trojans have had some big man touchdowns over the years, but no one as big as Jah who showed some impressive speed on his interception return. They also discuss USC making its AP Poll top-25 debut at No. 25 and the highly anticipated game at Illinois getting Fox's Big Noon Kickoff treatment on September 27. The Trojans didn't win a true conference road game last season and now get that monkey off their back as the Big Ten schedule begins to heat up. It wasn't the cleanest game for Lincoln Riley and company, with 9 penalties for 104 yards, 4 for 13 on 3rd down conversions and giving up double-digit explosive passing plays to Purdue. But the Trojans were able to make some big plays of their own, including three interceptions with a pick-6 by Jamaal Jarrett, 10 yards per pass attempt by Jayden Maiava, zero punts and a perfect 4 for 4 on fourth down plays. The crew breaks down everything they saw and heard in West Lafayette, including the unexpected three hour weather delay that put all game plans in jeopardy and the importance of picking up a road conference win against a Purdue squad that looks much improved over last season. Williams discusses the trials and tribulations he endured during his rehab for an injury he initially thought would only require a short recovery and allow him to get back on the court by the end of the 2024-25 season. Williams talks about his relationship with Musselman and how it led to him returning to USC despite the rest of the roster departing. He also discusses his role as a leader this season and what the 6-foot-7 wing has seen from this year's roster as he's slowly worked his way back onto the court, though he's still yet to be 100 percent cleared for full contact. After a break, Shotgun and Connor discuss what they've seen from a couple of recent practices since the Trojans have returned for training camp in the lead up to the 2025-26 season. They look at how the roster has developed since first being assembled and debate what the starting lineup could look like.
