Japan Blues // 02 Apr 2026

It's not normal! How many artists in the history of music start out as pop stars to then define underground scenes for decades? Yuzuru Agi, for starters. The handsome actor and kayoukyoku singer's run in the mid 1960s was followed briefly in 1970 as an existential folk singer - his 100 copy private press single, I Am A Sad Weekend Hippy/Hardly Living, being reissued a few years back. In the late 1970s, a radio DJ, he founded Vanity Records, in what became a vital chapter in the history of Japanese experimental and electronic music. Initially releasing two ambient styled LPs, and the legendary Aunt Sally, while publishing the plainly titled Rock Magazine. Inspired by Brian Eno and "krautrock", he took his cue from these revolutionary sound makers, focussing on music encompassing punk, the independent experimental music that preceded it and followed in its wake. Early issues of the magazine reviewed and interviewed members of the independent label scenes of various stripes, and the artists who inspired them. Occasional issues featured cheeky flexi-discs of early electronic music, an interview with Eno, the occasional European band, and promoted some Vanity artists. Some of the label's material was then culled from demos sent to the magazine, and pressed in small runs of 300-500 copies from the late 70s to the early 80s. It guides the choppy waters of tape music, strident synth sounds pre-dating House, watery dub predicting Basic Channel, lots of degraded, distorted crunch, kosmische strumming and the "post-punk" of Aunt Sally (fronted by Phew). Agi released another magazine in the late 1990s, on the pulse of the offshoot dance underground; then a music blog that continued until his death in 2018, his passion for new visions in music never satiated. Pretty sure Moondog once wrote: "All is vanity", said the old man - "Vanity is all" said the young man.

Highlighting another outlier in the history of Japanese record labels. Rather than a major label offshoot, Vap Records was formed out of the Nippon Television Network in 1981. Vap - "Video Audio Project", with the sub title "Visual x Audio x Power" - in the mood of the heady days of the early 1980s, when the commerce crazy "bubble economy" mindset bled into popular culture. Just in time for the commercial launch of the compact disc, the broader spread of video tape, Laser Disc, alongside the new overlords, music video and computer games. To complement these dazzling new technologies, a good proportion of the music was techno-pop or techno-kayou. Hot new synth sounds elevated, what at first seemed standard idol fare to new heights, with a hint of chugging proto-house rhythms and the odd quirky production twist. The label also hosted some heady organic jazz and curious rock and soul output, making Vap a hard imprint to pin down.
