I am currently waiting for the results of a biopsy, shaken to my core, as always. Fears, deep regrets, self-doubt, and the tendency to shrink in the presence of cruel narcissists—you’d think those burdens would vanish after being given a new lease on life. But I still struggle. The difference is, this time around, I tell myself, “This too shall pass.” And I believe it. Still, I need this Novena. I would never dare minimize anyone else’s pain or suffering. But during my own struggles, I’ve found it helps to focus on my heart and try to feel happiness—as if the pain or obstacle is already behind me. And it works. Sometimes. 🙂 Internal happiness—completely independent of circumstances—isn’t easy to achieve. But when I do manage to generate it, it’s a powerful feeling. At the end of the day, you can be the luckiest, most fortunate person on the planet—but if you don’t feel joy in your life and in your day, you have nothing. I was granted the miracle of healing from a terminal disease, and yet life hasn’t become any easier. Challenges still arise like clockwork. Guilt can make us hate ourselves. That hatred corrodes both mind and body. I had to learn to accept my mistakes and forgive myself in order to begin healing.
