Since the late 1970’s musician, author, historian, music journalist John Robb has seen just about everything. After writing nine books ranging from Goth Rock to Brit Pop (a term that he coined himself), after writing for such respected music publications as The Melody Maker, Sounds, The Guardian, The Independents (and many others), after running the website Louder Than War, after appearing in nearly every British music documentary over the last several decades, and after releasing more than two dozen records with his bands The Membranes and Goldblade—John Robb has finally written about his own amazing life story. His latest book “Punk Rock Ruined My Life: And Other Stories” (out May 19th) takes a look at the ups and downs of a wild career! John and I talk about everything from David Bowie to the Sex Pistols, to being the first British journalist to interview Nirvana, to bands we both love, to running a fanzine, to the late Steve Albini, and a whole lot more. How does one Jam Econo? Baxie talks to the legendary Mike Watt! Since forming The Minutemen with the late D. Boon in 1980 Mike Watt has become one of the busiest and most respected bass players ever. He’s repeatedly been listed as one of the all-time greats by the NME, The LA Weekly, and Bass Player Magazine (who awarded him their lifetime achievement award in 2008.) Watt has played with The Stooges, fIREHOSE, members of Sonic Youth, Eddie Vedder, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl from Nirvana, Flea, the Beastie Boys, Jane’s Addiction, and literally dozens and dozens more. This week Baxie talks to Michael Pickering—one of the former DJs at the infamous Hacienda in Manchester, England. Michael has just released his incredible memoir, “Manchester Must Dance”. In it, Michael takes a firsthand account of how the club became an extension of Factory Records (And how it was financed, in part, by the record sales of two its biggest artists: New Order and Happy Mondays.) Together we talk about how the club succeeded and what led to the Hacienda’s spectacular collapse. We also talk about his participation in the film "24-Hour Party People" about the Hacienda changed music forever. On top of that, we also discuss how he adopted the help of writer Paul Morley, Johnny Marr from The Smiths, Martin Fry from ABC, Calvin Harris, and Noel Gallagher from Oasis!
