The Story of Sir Lancelot and His Companions
Howard Pyle
This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice.
After Queen Guinevere and her company are captured by Sir Mellegrans, they ride all day and night through a dark forest until they reach his castle on a steep hill near a town. During the journey, the Queen secretly tells her young page, Denneys, to escape if he can and bring news to someone who might rescue them. When the group reaches the road to the castle, Denneys slips away unnoticed and rides back into the forest.
Sir Mellegrans becomes furious when he discovers the escape and sends armed men to hunt Denneys and kill him with arrows, but the boy manages to evade them in the darkness. Lost and frightened, Denneys wanders through the forest all night, hearing strange creatures moving around him. At dawn, the forest comes alive with birdsong and sunlight, though Denneys is too tired, hungry, and worried to enjoy it.
Eventually he finds a clearing with a neatherd’s hut beside a brook. A kindly woman and a young girl take pity on him, giving him milk and bread, which restores his strength. After thanking them, Denneys continues his journey throughout the day. When night falls again, he hears a bell and follows the sound to a hermit’s chapel in the forest. As he approaches, he hears a horse nearby and realizes another traveler is there, giving him hope that he may find companionship and help.
