Chief Executive of Brittany Ferries

4/27/2026
My next guest got under the noses of many in the airline sector when he accused some of them of ‘profiteering’ from the energy crisis by hiking up fares or adding fuel surcharges. Christophe Mathieu from Brittany Ferries likened some of the airlines to bad gamblers for not hedging or fixing the future delivery prices of their fuel. He also said that his ferry company, which runs ferry services between Cherbourg in Northern France to Cork and Rosslare, would NOT be hiking up prices this summer nor adding any fuel surcharges. Christophe Mathieu the chief executive of Brittany Ferries joined Joe Lynam on the show this morning.

Why are the markets seemingly so sanguine?

4/27/2026
The S&P 500 index of shares reached an all time high last week, as did the Nasdaq and the Dow Jones is hovering near its record as well. All this at a time of the biggest energy supply interruption in history which could in theory push Europe, Asia and much of the world, which depends on oil imports, into recession. So why are the markets seemingly so sanguine? David Roche runs Quantum Strategies and is based in Singapore and joined Joe Lynam on the show this morning.

Nearly 4-months since the introduction of the new Auto-Enrolment scheme

4/26/2026
We’re approaching the 4-month mark since the introduction of the new Autoenrolment scheme, now known as MyFuture Funds. The pension savings scheme obliges workers on lower wages to start saving for their retirement by deducting a small amount from their salaries, which is topped up by their employers and the State. Although Ireland was one of the last countries in Europe to introduce such a scheme, it’s a big undertaking, and we don't yet know what the official take-up has been. It comes as the government is hoping to get us to save less and invest more through a proposed new Savings & Investment scheme. Shane O'Farrell is Director of Employer Solutions with Irish Life and joined Joe Lynam on the show this morning.

Daragh McGreal Chief Economist with KPMG

4/21/2026
Yesterday we heard from the Government in its Spring economy Forecast that Ireland is likely to avoid a recession even in the event of a prolonged fuel crisis in the middle east. That chimes with estimates from KPMG which says that Ireland will outperform many of its European peers amid this energy shock.
